How to build a highly effective network

Develop a concrete plan for creating the right network to grow your career.

Before You Start

Goal: Take an honest look at your current networks, understand the three kinds of networks that drive a career, and leave with concrete strategies to build a stronger, more strategic network.

Watch: "Building Effective Networks" — with Herminia Ibarra, Professor of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD Business School (Stanford Clayman Institute, Voice & Influence Program). Members are encouraged to watch beforehand, but a quick recap at the meeting works too.

👋 Member Updates · 10 mins

Go around your Circle and share personal updates. Keep them brief and focused on significant changes or important decisions since the last time you met. It's OK not to have one every month. If you have a One Action update from last time, share that too.

🧊 Icebreaker · 10 mins

Invite everyone in the group to share. Keep answers to one or two minutes per person.

Who is someone in your network who opened a door for you — and how did the two of you first connect?

💡 Key Takeaways · 5 mins

The most valuable networks aren't the most comfortable ones — they're the most intentional.

  • Networks enable you to offer more and have more impact. They're how work actually gets done and how careers move forward.

  • "Just like me" convenience networks aren't the most effective. We need a diversity of ideas, inputs, information, and resources — and there's real strength in "weak ties," the people we don't know well or see often.

  • There are three kinds of networks. Operational (relationships that get today's work done), Personal (people you choose to spend time with), and Strategic — the most important for career advancement — relationships that help you envision your future, sell your ideas, and get the information and resources you need.

  • Great strategic networks are broad, connective, and dynamic. Connected to diverse people, bridging groups that wouldn't otherwise meet, and growing as you grow.

  • Building networks takes work and intention. Engage inside and outside your organization, connect through people you already know, develop the value you bring, and prioritize a few activities — favoring active over passive networking.

💬 Discussion Questions · 20 mins

Move through the questions at the pace that suits your Circle. You don't need to cover every one — pick the prompts that resonate most.

  1. What do your networks currently look like? Do you have mostly "just like me" convenience networks?
  2. Where have your "weak ties" paid off in unexpected ways?
  3. Of the three kinds of networks — operational, personal, and strategic — which is strongest for you, and which needs the most work?
  4. What steps could you take in the next months to strengthen the weak parts of your network?
  5. What, if anything, holds you back from building the kind of network you'd like to have? Think of some ways to overcome those barriers.
  6. Which strategy would make the biggest difference right now: engaging beyond your org, connecting through people you know, or something else that Ibarra suggested?

✍️ Write It Down · 2 mins

Take a few minutes to connect the discussion to your own life.

Write about your networks: What do they currently look like? What challenges do you face when cultivating them, and how might you start to address those challenges?

🎯 One Action · 10 mins

Commit to one concrete action — big or small — you'll take before next meeting. Go around the Circle and share (1 minute or less per member). Vocalizing it helps hold each other accountable.

Pick one action to strengthen your network and specify who, what, where, and when it will happen. Example: "I'll reconnect with X, a 'weak tie' in my network, and set up a short phone call."

📅 Wrap-Up · 5 mins

Before you break, plan your next meeting and close on an energetic note. Go around your Circle one by one and finish the sentence:

Now I am feeling… (choose one word).

  • Set the day, time, and location
  • Choose the next topic or resource
  • Confirm who's leading the discussion
  • Decide how you'll stay in touch in between
